The Varble Lab studies the ability of bacteria to quickly adapt to drastic changes in their environment. Bacteria have evolved the ability to acquire new genetic material through horizontal gene transfer, allowing evolutionary timescales that can be measured in minutes.

By gaining a better understanding of the paths and barriers of gene transfer we gain insight into how virulence develops, while also developing tools for genetic manipulation.
